Learning Resources

Be smart about taking notes in chemistry and other classes.  The Cornell Note Taking
format is a good way to capture concepts, provide prompts for reciting and review and a third column at the bottom to summarize the key points of the whole page.

If you use a LEFT/RIGHT rule to express numbers in scientific notation, the attached file will explain the mathematical concepts involved in using SCIENTIFIC NOTATION. You will find it unnecessary to use the left/right "gimmick."

Learn to use the scientific calculator correctly. It will feel awkward to re-learn keystrokes, but "work-arounds" will not work for all calculations.  This Calculator Module shows step-by-step keystrokes for multi-step multiplication and division calculations.  After you master these calculations, you'd be able to add other functions to your set of skills.

You will find that you will use dimensional analysis to solve many chemistry problems.  The Dimensional Analysis with Equivalences is a visual organizer for converting units.

If you have completed CHEM 1411 or CHEM 1412 using the TRO text, Chemistry: Structure and Properties, the attached MOLE tracking page will help you find example questions that utilize the mole concept in a diverse set of concepts.
